Front-End Case Study

Custom Shopify powered e-commerce.

Designing and developing a mobile responsive, Shopify powered e-commerce platform for the Ink Cartridge Industry.

Project Overview

This project involved designing and developing a fully-responsive, Shopify powered e-commerce platform from the ground up. The primary goal was to create a seamless and intuitive shopping experience for users while providing our business with a scalable and easy-to-manage back-end.

The focus was on a user-centric design approach, conducting extensive research within the ink and toner industry to identify key user pain points in the existing market. We implemented modern front-end frameworks and libraries to ensure a fast, reliable, and secure landing pages.

The Challenge

The existing market was saturated with outdated and slow e-commerce sites. Our challenge was to build a platform that not only looked modern but also performed exceptionally well, even under heavy traffic. Key challenges included:

  • Building a dynamic product filtering and search system without sacrificing performance.
  • Ensuring the site was fully responsive and accessible on all devices.
  • Creating a modular component library for future scalability.
  • Developing an efficient way to manage a large and constantly changing product catalog of surplus items.

My Role & Solution

As the lead front-end developer, I was responsible for the entire user interface and user experience implementation. I worked closely with the design team to translate high-fidelity mockups into functional, pixel-perfect code. My solution involved:

  • Technology Stack: I used the Bootstrap 5 CSS framework and customized a Shopify Liquid template to ensure a high-quality, mobile-first design.
  • To solve the challenge of managing a large product catalog, I implemented a solution that integrates with an Amazon Products API, which streamlined product data and image importing.
  • Improved User Flow: I created a streamlined user flow with a new dashboard and guest tracking link. This provided users with real-time updates and notifications on their order status, addressing a major pain point.
  • Performance Optimization: I focused on optimizing asset loading and utilized lazy loading techniques to improve page load times.

Results & Takeaways

The new platform launched successfully, resulting in a 40% increase in conversion rates within the first quarter. We now have a robust upselling channel that allows us to manage and sell our overstock inventory. Users reported a more enjoyable shopping experience, and the client was thrilled with the improved site performance.

This project taught me the importance of a strong foundational architecture and the value of close collaboration between design and development teams. It reinforced my passion for building beautiful and functional web applications that solve real-world problems.
